Van Hall Larenstein

Velp & Leeuwarden

The design of the University of Applied Sciences Van Hall Larenstein in Velp had to be adjusted to accommodate 500 extra students and 50 extra employees. What's more, it also had to be done within a very short period of time. When COARE Architecture joined the project, the general feeling was that this was an impossible undertaking. During this meeting, we clearly defined the problem statement and requirements. And the conclusion was that if we could address the challenges with regard to time, logistics and manpower in a smart way, then we should, in theory, be able to complete the project within the allotted timeframe. Whether this was true would remain to be seen.

University-wide workshops with students, teachers and employees provided us with insight into the wishes and requirements of the users. Meanwhile, drawings and calculations were being made behind the scenes to know how much space was needed and where it would be most useful. The process of obtaining permits and tenders was also put in motion. During this time, COARE Architecture was able to draw on its experience with learning environments. We could use this as a basis for the design before the results of the workshops were discussed and all the details were filled in. By anticipating, we ensured we did not lose precious time during the process.

The vision for the building's interior design was to create an attractive place that would feel like home for staff, teachers and students. At the same time, these groups also needed their own environments. We wanted to strike an optimal balance between social and academic interaction and succeeded in doing so by making smart and flexible use of spaces, in accordance with findings from the workshops.

What seemed impossible was made possible. In record time, we crafted a result that meets all needs and that all users are extremely happy with. In addition, the successful result has led to COARE Architecture being awarded another project: the revitalisation of Van Hall Larenstein's school location in Leeuwarden.
